Bush Walks in Maasai Mara

Bush Walks

The conservancies are increasingly gaining popularity with guided game walks. One or two armed escorts who carry light firearms alongside a very knowledgeable guide accompany most. During these walks, guides, armed escorts and guests walk in a group, and deliberately follow established routes through open areas with good visibility and very limited likelihood of encountering dangerous wildlife.

In a few camps, guests are guided through denser bush where a spotter with binoculars scouts ahead and lets the party know that it’s safe to proceed. In these walks, accompanying ranger has bigger caliber weapons. They come with popular bush walk plan where the plan is to leave from camp at dawn by 4WD, with breakfast and a camp kitchen packed in the vehicle.

Your walk begins as soon as you’re dropped off for about two hours walk and you link up with the vehicle at the bush breakfast spot. After this, you have an option to drive back to camp after breakfast – or walk back if the route is suitable.

Night Game Drives

In the African bushes, night falls early and imaginary very quickly. Sundown varies through the year between about 6.30 pm and 7 pm and this applies to Kenya’s Maasai Mara. That is the nocturnal wildlife become active around 6 pm onwards from this time. Get ready for a night actions. A typical night game drive follows on naturally from a late afternoon game drive.

From the afternoon game drive, you will stop at the camp’s favourite sundowner spot at around 6.15 pm and have some drinks and some bites as the sun drifts below the horizon. In the power of the darkness, you then set off back to camp very slowly with the spotter directing the spotlight.

You will notice that camps are increasingly switching from white lights to orange or red lights, which are much less stressful for wildlife. Depending on what you’ve requested in advance, you might get back to camp for dinner at about 8 pm. Alternatively, you can often do a later night drive, setting off after an early dinner. Most conservancies require camp vehicles to be back in camp latest, by 10 pm.

Many of the guides working in the conservancies are from the Maasai community living in the villages surrounding the Maasai Mara National Reserve. For guests who are interested in incorporating a Maasai cultural experience into your itinerary, there is a very good chance that your guide will take you either to the Maasai village where he grew up, or to a village where he has long-term friends or relatives.

Experience the authentic and fully functional Maasai village visitation that are untouched by commercialism. Maasai culture is raw, powerful and will change you positively for the rest of your life. Leave the village with a smile and appreciation at how their customs and traditions have remained unchanged for decades, despite the rapid technological development that have affected the rest of the world.

Fly and Bush Camping

Carrying the minimum requirements for a comfortable night in the bush, a fly or bush camp is a lightweight campsite set up exclusively for your party’s strict privacy upon request. It brings the experience of cooking dinner around the African campfire, while enjoying the sounds of the night, and sleeping in a lightweight tent out under the star-studded sky of the Maasai Mara.

The camping is ideal for guests who have booked three or more nights at the main camp. Falling asleep in your bush camp while listening to elephants passing nearby, or waking up with a herd of giraffes towering above your tents.
