Ibencho is the last Kenya’s landmark owned by the Oluokos family and working together with the host community to preserve the environment through ecotourism in southwestern Kenya part of Muhuru, Migori at Kenya and Tanzania border. This remote habitat is a destination in itself, offering the only signature safari of its kind in an ecologically significant and unique landscape rich in biodiversity.
Ibencho’s story is one of restoration, regeneration and low-impact tourism that changes lives. Protecting biodiversity and securing habitat for wildlife to thrive has been at the core of this ambitious conservation project for over 5 years. Our mission has always been to restore the Ibencho Hills ecosystem to itself. Every night a guest spends with us helps to offset the cost of conservation in our privately protected area while positively impacting those who call the Ibencho Hills home.
A scenic region characterized by open grassy fields, open woodland and tree-lined a permanent sandy river and punctuated with large granite boulders and kopjes are the prominent feature of the poorly known Ibencho Hills.
This rocky plateau, where pungent Orange-leaf Croton bushes (Croton dichogamus), shrub-like trees, isolated Balanite tree, symbolic acacia trees, patches of euphorbia and numerous grass species grow, provide habitat for the elusive and shy African Firefinch (Lagonosticta rubricata). It’s also the place to be on the lookout for the polymorphic and variable Slate-coloured Boubou (Laniriaus funebris). The Bare-faced Go-away-bird (Crinifer personatus) is often perched on top of trees while giving is signature go-go-go awaaaay call before flying to the next vantage position. At the foothills of Ibencho, lies a different ecosystem where the dry bush land meets the moist foothill with more bird species occurring here with the notable one being the Tropical Boubou (Laniriaus major), White-browed Robin-chat (Cossypha heuglini).
Away from the foothill, the terrain changes to acacia riverine forest and a good size of the woodland along the sandy Tito River that snakes its way from the higher altitude while flwing to the west into Lake Victoria. With its heavily gullied banks, the site is a good habitat for bee-eaters, martins, kingfishers and a good number of water birds. During the rains, this habitat supports a good number of Grey-crowned Cranes (Balearica regulorum) alongside a good number of ducks and waders.
Ibencho Hills Sanctuary is an awesome private wildlife conservancy sitting on the borderline between Kenya and Tanzania at an altitude of 1,277 meters. Ibencho Hills boasts for a near perfect microclimate, over 200 species of birds and a reasonable population of resident animals calling Ibencho their home.
Ibencho Hills – Kenya’s Last Signature… is an ultimate destination to chill out as you unwind from the traditional lifestyles. Expect the unexpected at the nature’s arena where the night sky is smothered by the stars, soothed by unmistakable sounds of the Spotted Hyena, bush babies, African Civet, nightjars and a collection of nocturnal insects.
An early wakeup call and breath in the cool air of the Ibencho Hills Sanctuary as you sample the best birds’ calls during our nature walk as you overlook Tanzania, connect with nature at sunrise and just soak yourself in the spirit of Ibencho.
The Oluokos’, had a dream… and in the year 2017 Ibencho Hills Sanctuary was found. Our passion is to conserve the ecosystem of Ibencho Hills and to manage the human-wildlife conflict such that both the local communities and the wildlife could coexist in harmony.
We are equally proud of our achievements so far. However, we still believe that there is need to keep our dreams alive by finding attainable ways in which the sustainability can improve its contribution to Kenya’s nature conservation.
Based on our research findings, the local area was originally well populated with a large variety of wild animals. For example, we know that it was home to large herbivores, including; buffalo, elephants, elands, waterbucks, and gerenuks, and carnivores, such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and much more.
Unfortunately, the populations have since been drastically reduced or decimated altogether due to the human-wildlife conflict of years past. With a reasonable understanding that some of the species have even gone extinct locally Ibencho Hills Sanctuary’s belief is that a successfully re-establishment of some of the animals back into this habitat is still possible.
Kenya’s Last Signature – We Believe that Ecotourism Works
Founded out of the need to prevent the wildlife on from infringing upon the developing communities and vice versa, Ibencho Hills Sanctuary is for the coexistence of both man and wildlife.
At the heart of our conservation philosophy, the success of Ibencho Hills would still enable both wildlife and communities to prosper. We strongly believe that the successful development of communities and nature conservation is possible.
Ibencho Hills Sanctuary is proud of its many natural jewels, which includes its enormous birds and plants species alongside the remnant wildlife. However, human-wildlife conflict remains our next big challenge and we are looking forward to taking this forward through partnerships, sponsorship and donations. Please read more on how to support us.
Ibencho Hills consists of an unfenced area of over 100 acres and further more acres of game patches and riverine land along the foot of the hills on the deeply fissured Tito River that also marks the last water point between Kenya and Tannzania.
On both the Eastern and Western sides of the Ibencho Hills, there are community farms who heavily rely on the Tito River for their farming activities and it’s on this same side that also acts as the wildlife corridor especially if it will be maintained and managed to allow the free and natural roaming of animals between the Tanzania plains and Ibencho Hills Sanctuary.
We are overjoyed in conserving both indigenous and threatened species, providing a protected habitat for all species threatened by the ever-growing human-wildlife coexistence which is a challenge. Ibencho Hills is a vital refuge for wildlife displaced elsewhere as a result of both human population increases and development, and holds a significant proportion of the region’s remnant wildlife.
