Trip Overview

Watch the Big Herds on Their Migration Trail

This is the greatest migration on earth! The herds move in a clockwise direction, up from the south of the Serengeti National Park, through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the Loliondo Game Controlled Area, and the Grumeti Reserve. They then leave Tanzania briefly to spend time in the Maasai Mara in Kenya, which borders Serengeti National Park to the north, before heading back south to start the journey again. Most of the migration takes place in the far larger Serengeti, Tanzania than in the Maasai Mara, Kenya.

The migration brings together between 1.5 to 2 million wildebeest alongside zebras and other wildlife who together, trek a total of 800 km or more during each migration cycle across Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara in search of lush pasture and water. Get ready for a safari of your lifetime.

Day 0 & 1

Explore Kenya's historic capital, Nairobi City

Upon your arrival, you will be received by our English-speaking representative at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport arrivals hall. Our representative will walk you through the welcome package documents, and your itinerary and answer any questions you may have. You will enjoy a complimentary private transfer from the airport to your hotel.

This morning after spending a relaxed night at the hotel, you will now have an opportunity to enjoy some of Africa’s most iconic animals in the city of Nairobi and this will give us access to giant elephants and towering giraffes.

Spending our day at the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphaned Trust will allow us to learn more about conservation efforts being made to protect these giants. We will then stop at the Giraffe Center, where you’ll find Rothschild Giraffes wandering the grounds.

Our last memorable experience will include a tour of the Kazuri beads women factory where women from the community are committed to making beads as a way to live sustainably. From here we’ll drive back to the hotel for dinner and the night.

Day 3

Understanding the annual Wildebeest Migration

We’re quite sure, you’ve heard of the wildebeest migration thanks to numerous wildlife documentaries and themed movies around the Maasai Mara. However, not many are well-informed about this incredible wildlife phenomenon, such as where and when it takes place and what it entails. Many assume that the migration is all about dramatic river crossings but there’s so much more to this great wildlife spectacle than what meets the eye.

Bringing together an assemblage of wildebeest, gazelles and zebras, the wildebeest migration takes place across the plains of Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve while the super herds are in search for water and fresh pasture. In Tanzania, the migration takes place in December and continues through Kenya in July and August with herds staying all the way to October before trekking back to Tanzania. The migration also serves an important ecological function in the Serengeti-Maasai Mara ecosystem by replenishing the grasslands and sustaining predator populations.

From the comfort of our base on the Mara River, Governors Camp position is ideal to spot the wildlife, such as wildebeest and zebra, as they migrate on their annual journey through the Mara Triangle. The camp has been known to be surrounded by wildebeest, and with three regular river crossing points in the area, this is where you’ll be experiencing the epic Great Migration, and possibly river crossings (in our timing permits). Along with the herds of wildebeest and zebra, the herds attract thrilling predator action in the area, their presence adding a good dose of excitement to your daily game drives while at the same time enhancing your photography skills.

Champagne Breakfast in the Maasai Mara
In general, the best time to see the Great Migration in the Masai Mara is from July to October. Keep in mind though, mother nature is her own boss.

This morning, we will get out extra early just like the wildlife. We will drive out for the day’s first game drive and discover the dazzling biodiversity of the Maasai Mara ecosystem. Maasai Mara is the most recognized wildlife sanctuary and well known worldwide for its rich diversity.

It’s home to the African Big 5, namely the African elephant, Cape Buffalo, Rhinoceros, Leopard, and the Lion. Numerous species of bird and wildlife also inhabit the Maasai Mara, including hyenas, gazelles, impalas, giraffes, zebras, and a plethora of birds ranging from vultures to the tiny finches to the giant and the unmistakable Masai Ostrich. We will enjoy our picnic lunch in one of the many picturesque spots while comparing notes regarding our wildlife checklist.

On our afternoon game drive, the choice is up to you! Continue pursuing the Big 5 or expand your horizons to discover some of the region’s least-known wildlife. The Masai Mara not only has a rich mix of mammals both large and small but is also host to an incredible array of birdlife that includes over 400 different species without forgetting some amazing sun-ups and sundowns.

We will provide you with a very probable outline of when to expect those special moments during the Great Migration, but obviously there is no way to know for certain that the herds will cross a river during a particular period of time.

Weather can be unpredictable and late rains or early rains can result in a delayed or early migration pattern. The good news is that the Maasai Mara has plenty of wildlife to enjoy all year round.

The months that are most frequently mentioned as the best time of year to visit the Great Migration, July to October, are also the busiest months in the Maasai Mara.

It is safe to say that you won’t have the herds to yourself during these months. You can expect more safari travelers within the Maasai Mara National Reserve proper and may have to queue up during safari game drives. We’ll drive back to the camp for dinner and the night.
